  4.      The de Havilland Vampire was the second turbo-jet 
  5. powered British fighter. The original name was the Spider 
  6. Crab and it was planned around a portly central nacelle and 
  7. twin booms to allow use of a short and less efficient 
  8. tailpipe for the Goblin jet engine. The Goblin was of the 
  9. centrifugal flow type and there for a greater diameter 
  10. than axial flow types. The first prototype flew September 
  11. 1943, a mere 16 months after the start of the detail design. 
  12. The Mk 1 Vampire entered service in 1946 with a 2,700 pound 
  13. thrust engine and was followed by the Mk 3 with provisions 
  14. for underwing stores and modifications to improve 
  15. longitudinal stability. There were several models including 
  16. the Sea Vampire for carrier use and export models for 
  17. Switzerland.
